Jazz From Dawn To Dusk
Immerse Yourself In America’s Greatest Art Form.
There simply isn’t another summer jazz program that is as intense, in-depth, informative, and keeps you in the mindset from the time you wake up until the time you go to sleep. We’ve been told that the amount of information you will receive in one week is more than you’d receive in a year from anywhere else.
From Jazz Theory and Jazz Combos, Concerts and Jam Sessions, let’s take a look at the daily schedule of our week-long summer jazz workshops so you’ll know what to expect.
Breakfast at The University Club: 7:00am – 8:15am
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, or so they say. Get your morning fuel before classes begin and take the opportunity to greet fellow participants and faculty.
Theory Class: 8:30am – 10:00am
We offer five levels of theory from beginning to advanced. Each participant will take a theory placement test on Sunday, the first day of the week-long workshop, simply to assess their knowledge of jazz theory. You’ll be placed among others at the same level and each class is led by some of the best jazz educators in the world.
Jazz Musicianship: 10:00am – 11:00am
This general session, for everyone, is led by none other than Jamey Aebersold himself. Hosting a variety of topics, Jamey discusses everything from listening to jazz to how and what to practice, improvisation techniques, memorizing tunes and everything in between. A not-to-miss daily offering from the master of jazz education.
Combo Rehearsal: 11:00am – 12:30pm
One of two daily combo rehearsals, every participant is placed in a jazz group that will get them swingin’ from day one. Like the theory placement, each participant will have a placement audition on Sunday, the first day of the week-long jazz workshops, to determine their current musical ability – specifically within jazz and improvisation. The goal is to place everyone alongside other musicians “in the same boat” so you can get the appropriate level of instruction to make the most of your experience at the workshops. The goal is to get everyone playing jazz and most importantly, getting everyone to improvise!
Lunch at The University Club featuring LIVE JAZZ!: 12:30pm – 2:00pm
Lunchtime is special at the Jamey Aebersold Summer Jazz Workshops as it gives everyone an opportunity to both socialize and hear some live jazz! Every day at lunch, you’ll be treated to intimate concerts by the faculty while you enjoy the atmosphere of talking with other participants and faculty.
Master Class: 2:00pm – 3:30pm
We have master classes for all instruments and this will be the time where sax students are exclusively with the sax faculty, drummers are studying with the drum faculty, and so on. Everyone is broken up into smaller groups to keep the class sizes down offering a more intimate approach to jazz study. You’ll get instrument specific knowledge to help you further your jazz studies.
Combo Rehearsal: 3:30pm – 4:30pm
The second of two daily combo sessions will give you what you want the most. Play with enthusiasm and improvise with confidence!
Dinner at The University Club: 5:30pm – 7:00pm
While there won’t be any live music during dinner, you can look forward to the upcoming evening concerts. Enjoy dinner with the participants and faculty. Ask questions and discuss the experience of the day. Remember, most of the faculty dine with the participants and are not “stand off-ish.” They are there to HELP you, answer questions. Pull up a chair next to someone, enjoy dinner together and get to know them as more than just teachers.
Piano Voicings Workshop: 6:15pm – 7:15pm
Not just for pianists! This special offering often gets to be “standing room only.” UofL’s own Chris Fitzgerald leads this workshop to illustrate concepts in piano voicings that are applicable to all instrumentalists. See how important it is to have a relationship with the keyboard. Further hone your skills and expand your talents.
Faculty Concerts: 7:30pm – 10:00pm
We’ve been told the evening concerts are worth the price of admission alone! Never will there be a gathering of jazz educators, all performing the kind of standards and demonstrating the amount of material that you have been studying all day long. The concerts are not just for entertainment, but are a vehicle for further education. Follow along as someone points out all the changes on an overhead projector as the tune is played. You’ll better understand structure and solos and see just how jazz is supposed to be enjoyed by some of the masters of the craft.
Jam Sessions: 10:00pm – 11:30pm
It’s time to pick up your instrument and let loose. Showcase what you’ve learned and jump right into our late night, old-fashioned jam sessions. Some are faculty led, others are impromptu, and often times, people will get together with their combo to rehearse. We’ll have many options for those wanting to test what they’ve learned. If you’re a beginner, we’ll have a jam session that’s slower and if you’re more advanced, we’ll have a room that, perhaps, is “cookin'”. Don’t be afraid to jump in with both feet and HAVE FUN.
