2016 Summer Jazz Workshops Wrap-Up
Well, the jazz camps are over and I don’t know about you, but I’ve been practicing and listening ever since I left camp. I’ve got several things under control that I didn’t have before camp and that’s good. I didn’t fill out the “letter to myself” on the last Friday because I’ve always got one in my mind about what to do next.
I thought everything went well at both weeks of jazz camp and the special guests were spectacular. I’m sure you agree. Next year, I hope to have similar guest’s artists to enhance your jazz experience. One thing I did notice was that each guest was very open, friendly and seemed to thoroughly enjoy playing for you as well as being in our SPECIAL JAZZ environment. They play all the time for jazz audiences but our camp listeners have EARS and that makes a big difference when performing. They want to play their very best for you.
Next year, 2017, our jazz camp dates will be:
- July 1 & 2 two-day workshops
(Jamey’s Seminar & Rhythm Section Workshop)
- July 2 begins the first week. Ends on July 7
- July 8 & 9 two-day workshop (Rhythm Section Workshop)
- July 9 begins the second week. Ends on July 14
If you haven’t already started thinking of the notes of scales and chords using numbers, “Now’s the Time!” Also, memorizing the keyboard one octave can really help in identifying chords and intervals. It shortens the thought process and gives you correct answers quickly.
Do you recall me asking for a volunteer at each of the 10am sessions in the big auditorium? And the marvelous scat singing that each person sang while I accompanied them on piano… I sincerely hope you realize that YOUR music lies within you and that what you learned at jazz camp will help bring it to the surface and right out your instrument or your voice. You have to get the instrument under control or you’ll never hear the REAL YOU. There’s just nothing quite like making music … your own music.
Thanks for attending and we look forward to seeing and hearing you next year – that is, the new and improved musical YOU.
